The Sluice Point project, designed by Omar Gandhi Architect, is located in Argyle, Nova Scotia, Canada. The site sits on a forested ridge with views of attractive river islands in the Magog Bay area.
These desires were reflected in the architects' optimal solution to create both open and covered outdoor spaces. One of these areas allows residents to enjoy a cup of coffee while welcoming the early sunrise. The second area, a covered veranda, serves as a place for evening entertainment and continues the living room where residents and guests can warm themselves by the rotating fireplace, especially pleasant during the shoulder seasons.
The semi-circular layout of the residence places living areas facing scenic landscapes, pushing technical spaces to the back of the house. Both wings of the building are occupied by bedrooms, while the large central area, including the veranda and open porch in front of the structure, is fully clad in spruce and birch wood.
The modest roof of the most economical and efficient form skillfully references the style of local fishing shacks along the coast of Nova Scotia. Both walls and roof are dressed in eastern white cedar wood. From this common local material, excellent shingles can be made.
As guests approach, the low-pitched roof, gently sloped walls, and minimal glazing of the dwelling captivate. The entrance is illuminated, casting bright light through the building to its center. A captivating horizontal panorama unfolds for guests only when they cross the threshold of the residence, which conceals the scenic richness of the surrounding landscape behind its wide form.
