The building designed by Filipe Saraiva is located on a rectangular plot of land in Ourense, Portugal, with a gradual slope toward the south. The height difference between the highest and lowest points of the site is approximately 4.5 meters. These are agricultural lands with a natural landscape, a view to the south, and the castle of Ourense.
Regardless of culture, the most common concepts of housing show that our individual perceptions of home share much in common, because we all recognize it as a shelter protecting us from the outside world. It is our refuge and our personal world. The archetype of a dwelling is usually represented as a proportional polygon of regular geometric shape with well-balanced dimensions.
This model became the concept of the project, during the development of which the architect aimed to be as consistent as possible and not distort the core principle. The open veranda was designed with the same aesthetic approach as the main house. The architect created this home for himself and his family.
The plan was developed based on the modular principle of composition, generating a rhythmic pattern in the facades and roofs. This constructive method involves using standard-sized prefabricated black concrete panels. Using black concrete as a material allows for a smooth and harmonious integration of the structure into the landscape, as well as reducing maintenance costs.
