Clean Lines House in Belgium
A private house designed by Tom Mahieu Architect is built in the Flemish Ardennes in Belgium, known for its cobblestone bridges, international cycling race Tour of Flanders, and stunning landscapes.
A projecting block above the first floor creates a canopy over the entrance and a terrace on the south side. The overhang also serves as sun protection. The lower block is almost entirely made of glass, offering a great view of the national park across the road, a beautiful sight of the covered terrace to the south, and the garden at the back of the property. The upper part of the house is fully enclosed from the street side and entirely glazed on the north side with a view of the river and the city.
The building's walls are finished with white plaster combined with grey polished concrete and black window frames. The theme of white color with black accents continues inside, with special attention to details. The first floor combines the living room and dining room through an elegant 6-meter-long kitchen. A special block next to the kitchen area houses the entrance, stairs, toilet, and several cupboards.
The building features a large concrete basement, which is necessary in the typical soil conditions of the Flemish Ardennes. The house stands out for its low energy consumption, underfloor heating, solar panels, high-efficiency ventilation system with heat recovery; but most importantly, it offers superb views from its windows.
