Rural House in England
Hall + Bednarczyk Architects studio designed a four-bedroom family home in a secluded valley in Monmouthshire, United Kingdom. The new 250 square meter building replaced a modest 1960s bungalow.
The project features a simple and confident volumetric spatial solution executed in a modern style. The steel structure enabled an open and flexible layout, including double-height spaces and long window openings. Local materials such as sandstone quarried three miles from the house enhance the sense of kinship between the building and its surroundings. The architects also considered that over time, the house will naturally be covered with moss and lichen, acquiring a noble character as it ages.
The secluded rural location made it possible to use extensive glazing zones that flood living spaces with natural light and offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, which seems to flow into the building. Large sliding glass panels open up the interior space towards the surrounding nature.
