Apartment Casa Flora, located in the heart of Venice, Italy, is designed as a place where guests can feel like real Venetians, not just tourists in a museum city.
The idea of such vacation accommodation, where travelers could feel like full-time residents, even if only temporarily, came to the mind of hotelier Joe Romano and was further developed during his collaboration with creative director of Design-Apart Diego Paccanelli. In summer 2015, a group of six students from several design schools such as Parsons School of Design in New York, Domus Academy in Milan, and IUAV in Venice was invited to Venice to participate in a project under the guidance of Matteo Gidoni, Diego Paccanelli, and Stefano Michelli. It was then that the final concept of the project was born.
The apartments became a platform for collaboration between small design studios and young designers who had the opportunity to showcase their professional knowledge and talents, as well as for newly emerging chefs ready to offer traditional dishes in a fresh interpretation. Each piece of furniture in Casa Flora is custom-made by local companies. More than twenty such firms were involved in this project to reinterpret the image of Venice in modern forms.
Interior designers focused on a new approach to traditional Venetian materials such as Palladian terrazzo floors, Murano glass, or briar wood.
Designers working on the furniture drew inspiration from local motifs, reinterpreting them in a modern way. For example, the kitchen island with a green-toned stone countertop resembles the facades of old palazzos and church altars. Meanwhile, the light blue cylindrical base and matching thin legs give it a contemporary look.
