Studio Ecker Architekten developed a project combining the functions of living space and office in a building located in the western part of Geidelberg, Germany. In the past, this house housed a popular café among the local bohemians in the 1950s, but later it was badly damaged by numerous renovations.
On the first floor, a narrow long space is designated for a small architectural office, accessible from the busy Römerstrasse street. Passing through the studio space, one can enter the living areas located at the back of the house.
The previously two-story building was extended in height. The first level includes a dining room, kitchen, and double-height living room. A light latticed staircase leads to the mezzanine floor, where architects provided a library, bedroom, and guest room. The added third floor accommodated comfortable living spaces with access to a terrace on the roof of the second floor. The basement houses an archive and service rooms.
The total area of the renovated residence is 260 square meters, which accommodates both working spaces and comfortable zones designed for private and family life.
