Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Studio designed a single-story house with a meditation garden and pool in Silicon Valley, California, USA. The residence includes a main house of 385 square meters and a smaller guest house.
In the owners' bedroom, the sound of water trickling and the gentle rustle of trees can be heard from the garden.
The crosswing connecting the two wings houses the kitchen, dining room, and living room. From this open-plan area, access is provided to a wide terrace shaded by deep roof overhangs.
The wall of sliding glass doors in the living room blurs the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, offering a view of the patio and the meadow beyond with tall grass.
Architects chose materials that help create a calm atmosphere. The house is decorated using a natural and fresh palette reflecting the client's commitment to simplicity and tranquility. Various wood species—including Douglas fir, wavy maple, and gray ash—create a sense of warmth. These contrast with industrial-style elements such as polished concrete floors and steel structural beams and columns. The three-meter dining table in the dining area is made from locally sourced English walnut. Its natural uneven edges contrast with the clean lines of the living room.
