Flying House is a project developed by IROJE KHM Architects in one of Inchon's new districts, South Korea. The 195-square-meter residence belongs to a young pilot's family, and the house is situated close to the local airport.
To balance the sensation of instability that flying rooflines might evoke, a heating system under the stone floor was designed, which is a feature of traditional Korean construction. Following this tradition, the living room is set below floor level. This creates a symbolic balance between sky and earth.
Opposite the living room is a wide staircase with additional seating spaces, leading to the second floor that includes the owners' bedroom, bathroom, office, and children's study rooms. On this level, there is also a pavilion floating above the ground, offering views of the surroundings. The upper floor contains two smaller bedrooms for children.
The internal courtyard connects to the stairs and green-roofed structures, forming a landscaped hill one can walk on, enjoying closeness to nature and feeling secluded in the midst of urban hustle.
