Minimalist Apartment Interior in Athens

The clients received this 190 square meter apartment located in the northern suburbs of Athens, Greece, as an inheritance. The eclecticism of the existing décor and abundance of ornaments contradicted the modern lifestyle of the new owners. Therefore, the interior design project carried out by GEM Architects was aimed at creating minimalist open spaces that would satisfy the clients' need for simplicity and tranquility.
A special plastering technique was used on the walls to achieve a warm light gray tone reminiscent of paper. In this bright space, individual elements in anthracite-black color were placed — kitchen furniture, tables, shelves, fireplace, lighting fixtures, and blinds. This contrast creates an ascetic dialectic of the interior.
The cement mortar in its natural gray tone was used on the walls and floors of the bathrooms to achieve a unified minimalist effect with the rest of the house. Therefore, the cement walls separating the sinks and showers were custom-made.
Most of the lighting fixtures are embedded into the ceiling, except for the living room, library, and kitchen, where track spotlights were used to make the lighting as functional as possible.
