Attic Reconstruction in Strasbourg

The Attic project features two-level apartments spanning 240 square meters in the heart of Strasbourg, France. The apartment was created through the renovation of staff rooms and the attic above them in a 1901-built house. The project was realized by f+f architectes who used a limited set of materials: wooden floors, black MDF for built-in furniture, large ceramic tiles in bathrooms and kitchen.

A two-sided hallway with a large skylight is located at the center of the apartment; on one side are the parents' and children's bedrooms, and on the other side is a guest bedroom and office. The bathroom and storage areas are hidden behind the black box walls.

The aged, yellowed floor was preserved and renewed. Pine planks were treated with alkaline solution using a Scandinavian method. This gave the wood a light, almost white matte finish and a pleasant soft texture to the touch.

The owners' bedroom is designed as a small suite with an adjacent bathroom and wardrobe. Natural light enters through a large built-in glass panel in the roof, while the small windows from the previous room offer views of the surrounding park. The walls, floor and ceiling of the bathroom are tiled with large matte ceramic tiles in a marble finish, and the furniture is made from black MDF. The same material was used for the staircase steps, framed by glass railings.

The upper floor is organized as an open space combining the kitchen, living room and dining area, separated only by a wall with a built-in fireplace. The living room opens onto a large terrace. The same MDF was used for kitchen cabinets and wall cladding, while the island is finished with marble-style ceramic tiles.
