Dreamy Wooden-Glass Cabin for Open Space
Pinterest"This cottage is a spaceship that brings us back to Earth, to the basics," says Kaspar Schols, a Dutch designer who created it. After his father's death, Kaspar felt the need to retreat into nature for five weeks. "Walking through forests and swimming in lakes helped me discover the magic of life in the wild," he says.
After returning from this saving solitude, he agreed to his mother's request to create a cabin with an open view outdoors. But Kaspar sees further: he wants to be in harmony with the environment. He begins this observation cabin project right at the heart of the Maashorst nature reserve in the Netherlands.
"I wanted to interact with nature, live in harmony with fauna and flora."
The result is stunning: each cabin consists of two shells on tracks, one glass and one wooden, which can slide for different configurations of open space. "Depending on the weather we place the partitions more or less," says Kaspar. His project received an award, and an article in a design magazine caused a stir: his cottage became so famous that he decided to build four more just like it within the same "glamping" system (short for glamour camping) installed in the reserve. In each of them, wood plays a key role, prolonging the feeling of merging with the forest. We live there with all the comforts of a real home, following the rhythm of seasons and in the company of animals—Eemur ponies, bulls, and other bison. Like a modern Robinson…
