Gypsum board helps solve one of the most common problems – leveling walls and ceilings, which becomes much faster with it. This is important because a wooden house settles, and cracks may appear. Therefore, this issue should be well planned and considered during renovation in your house.

Installing Gypsum Board on Wooden Ceiling

Installation of gypsum board on a wooden ceiling starts with creating a ceiling framework that is mounted directly to the rough ceiling. Note that there is no need for rigid attachment along the wall perimeter.

The ceiling framework should fit as closely as possible to the gypsum board on the walls, but never be rigidly fixed. This is done so that nothing happens to the false ceiling during the settling of the rough ceiling. The gap formed during installation of such a structure can easily be masked using decorative cornices or picture frames.

It is now necessary to go into more detail regarding what exactly are walls made of gypsum board in a wooden house. Wall finishing with gypsum board in a wooden house is similar to finishing walls with any other material.

For example, all begins with installing metal profiles that serve as the base and guides when working with gypsum board sheets. Fastening is done using screws and a screwdriver, as they have greater distribution capacity than nails and enter the material with less indentation, which allows them to be masked during joint spackling.

IMPORTANT! Please note that gypsum board is a material intended for interior wall finishing, not suitable for external work. Therefore, let's look at how to cover the walls of your wooden home with gypsum board.

Installing Gypsum Board in a Wooden House

Installing gypsum board in a wooden house, like in an apartment, is done in several stages. Detailed breakdown by stages will help you quickly and efficiently implement your design ideas without spending a lot of time figuring out how to do it, how to trim or how to mount gypsum board in a wooden house.

Installing Metal Frame from Profiles

To do this, using a plumb line or vertical level, perform what is called layout of planes. This means drawing a straight line along the wall parallel to the wall on the ceiling. Then, from this line at the corners of the ceiling, drop a plumb line or use the level to transfer the line drawn on the ceiling to the floor. If you recall geometry lessons from school, this is called projection of a line onto another plane.

Making the Frame

Using U-shaped profiles and CD-profiles, create a frame that is impossible to align without it. In addition to the above-mentioned metal profiles, wooden profiles (timbers, strips) can also be used. In such a case, you will create a wooden framework that also serves as the frame. A wooden frame under gypsum board is a budget option and will please lovers of eco-friendly materials.

So, interior finishing of a wooden house with gypsum board has certain nuances. Due to the fact that walls built from wood have the property of 'breathing', i.e., expanding/contracting in volume depending on air humidity changes, to prevent cracks at the joints of gypsum board sheets, mounting it firmly into the surface is forbidden.

Gypsum board installation in a wooden house can be done on such bases:

  • on wooden walls;
  • on wooden strips;
  • on wooden timbers;
  • on wooden beams;
  • on wooden lath;
  • on wooden frame;
  • directly to wooden wall.

Let's dwell in more detail on what fixing gypsum board to wooden strips involves. Such a mounting method is ideal for walls where communication lines pass, which you want to hide or mask, or provide additional thermal or sound insulation.

You will need:

  • strips (softwood types recommended; cross-section 100x50 mm or 75x50 mm);
  • screws;
  • screwdriver;
  • plugs;
  • drill;
  • saw;
  • gypsum board.

Installation Process

Once everything is prepared, you can begin the installation process.

  • First, draw layout lines for future strip mounting along the wall perimeter, as well as lines for vertical strips.

IMPORTANT! When calculating the spacing between vertical strips, note that they should be located at the joint of gypsum board sheets.

  • For mounting strips to the wall, use plugs and a drill. If gaps form between the strip and the wall, fill them with wood or gypsum board scraps.
  • Horizontal support strips must be installed between the vertical strips.

IMPORTANT! Here, attention should be paid to the fact that horizontal strips must be installed at different heights.

After creating the grid base, you can proceed to mounting the gypsum board.

The optimal mounting method: each sheet edge should align precisely with the center of vertical and horizontal strips.

To fix gypsum board sheets, use a screwdriver and screws. The standard distance between screws is 15 cm; drive the screws into the sheet surface so that the fasteners are slightly recessed into the gypsum board.

For joint filling, it is recommended to use adhesive reinforcing tape.

IMPORTANT! If gaps between sheets exceed 3 mm, first spackle them, then cover with tape. Do not forget to also coat the tape itself with a thin layer of spackle.

Go over the dried spackle with sandpaper or a sander, and that's it – the wall is ready!
