Pavement Paving. Enhancing Territory
How to lay paving stones by yourself: where to start?
Why is pavement stone so advantageous?
First of all, the guaranteed service life of the paving stones, with proper installation and minimal annual maintenance can reach up to 15 years!
Secondly, the cost of the paving stones is about $5-7/m² and directly depends on the shape, texture, and color of the stones. This is an affordable price.

Technology of Laying Pavement Stones
With small areas, you can manage by yourself. But if you're going to pave about 150 m² or more, professional help is simply necessary!
After preparing the base (clearing the area for laying), lay sand to a height of about 5-7 cm and moisten it with a hose so that no deep holes form on the sand surface.

If work is done in warm weather, you can proceed to compact the surface, roll it, and level it after 2-3 hours. These tasks are usually done using special equipment, but they can also be performed with makeshift tools.

Figure 4 — Leveling the surface for stone laying
Prepare a dry sand-cement mixture (in a 3 to 1 ratio), which is then poured onto the sand to a height of 3-4 cm (to adjust the height and evenly distribute the mixture over the sand surface, you can use a rake).
IMPORTANT! The dry mixture is leveled using two laid pipes, moving along the surface with a construction level.
The technology of laying pavement stones involves starting from the curb. Stones are also laid away from you, not stepping on the mixture.
The laid stones are compacted with a heavy wooden mallet.
Check the level of stone laying after each row with a level. There are variants for leveling the stone laying, where the horizontal plane is lowered by removing some sand under a particular stone or by adding more sand to raise the level.
In patterned laying, cutting is necessary, which is done using a special tile cutter or angle grinder.
The curb for pavement stones can be either traditional stone or a retaining wall on the grass side, which is hidden by the height of the adjacent edge row during stone laying.

Rules for installing a stone curb:
IMPORTANT! The instruction for laying pavement stones allows installing curbs on concrete in any order: before or after laying the stones.
After completing the laying, fill the joints between stones with a dry mixture based on sand and cement, moisten the construction, and repeat if necessary to ensure full filling of the joints.
The mixture can be applied with a special brush (it's also convenient for sweeping up excess).
IMPORTANT! In winter, do not use metal tools to clean the stones. Such cleaning from ice or snow can cause surface deformation. It's better to use a special plastic-bladed snow shovel.
In addition to manual laying, there is also mechanical laying, which involves using a special machine for laying stones. The principle of operation of this device: the tile surface is laid onto a conveyor of the machine, from where it is fed to any type of prepared base after activating the device. As a result, you get a flat pavement stone with smaller gaps, properly compacted into the base, and laid without physical effort.
For working with large areas, this machine is indispensable: no old city or modern metropolis can do without it when replacing stones on sidewalks.

$ Cost of Laying Pavement Stones
Master services for laying pavement stones will cost approximately $10-12/m². For larger volumes of work, it is recommended to sign a contract according to SNiP and other construction standards, and the payment should also be based on a budget with clearly defined completion times for the tasks.
When contacting a particular master or construction company, you have the right to request samples of work done by these contractors.
How much does laying pavement stones cost:
- removal of old pavement – from $5/m²;
