Selection and Installation of Chandeliers for Suspended Ceilings

Appearance
A chandelier can be elongated along the ceiling plane or perpendicular to it. The shape and appearance of the chandelier are less important for the operation of a suspended ceiling compared to its technical characteristics. However, the lower the ceiling, the smaller and higher the chandelier should be. For high ceilings, larger volumetric structures can also be selected.
Another factor to consider, especially for glossy ceilings with good reflective properties, is the appearance of the chandelier's top. The side of the chandelier adjacent to the ceiling will reflect like a mirror, especially if the ceiling is dark. Therefore, it's important to choose a chandelier whose top has an aesthetically pleasing appearance: no visible fasteners or wires, the top is designed in the same style as the outer part, etc.
Metals or chrome-plated chandeliers adorned with crystal work best with suspended ceilings. You can view photos of many such fixtures in online store catalogs.

Chandelier Mounting
Any chandelier is mounted directly to the ceiling (floor slab), not to the suspended ceiling. There are two main types of mounting: chandeliers mounted on a mounting plate and those installed on a hook. Installation planning for both types of chandeliers should be considered before installing the suspended ceiling: wiring must be arranged and mounting method determined.
If the distance between a regular ceiling and a suspended ceiling is small, an opening is cut in the suspended ceiling after it is installed and the chandelier is secured. If this distance is large, you should plan for an extended ceiling mounting in advance, taking into account the weight of the chandelier. The mounting point is covered with special plastic fittings for suspended ceilings or the chandelier's own cup designed for this purpose.

Temperature
One of the main factors affecting a chandelier that may negatively impact a suspended ceiling is heating. Violation of normal temperature conditions can lead to stretching, darkening, and even melting of the ceiling.
Important! Before hanging or even purchasing a chandelier to be mounted on a suspended ceiling, it's important to consider the placement of the shades in relation to the ceiling.
It is undesirable to purchase a chandelier whose shades face the ceiling. It's better if they look down or sideways. If energy-saving or LED bulbs are used, there is no need to worry about the distance from the bulb to the ceiling. If incandescent or halogen bulbs are used, it is recommended to maintain a distance of at least 20 cm from the ceiling. If there is a small gap between the bulb and the chandelier, special reflectors should be installed between them.
When selecting a chandelier, it's important to consider the number and power of the bulbs. The lower their power, the less they heat up. Therefore, it's better to choose chandeliers with more bulbs of lower power. Additionally, attention should be paid to the material of the chandelier's housing: the housing contacts the suspended ceiling at mounting points, and thus can damage the suspended ceiling when heated.

Important! Before hanging a chandelier and even before installing the suspended ceiling, all possible lighting setup scenarios should be planned.
Installing a universal mounting plate for chandeliers is beneficial if you plan to change the chandelier later with one that has a different mounting system. If point lighting is planned, even more attention should be paid to the temperature issue – special thermal-resistant pads may be needed to insulate the fixture from the ceiling surface.
If summarized, the best reviews are given by chandeliers that are sufficiently far from the ceiling, have many shades for small-power bulbs, and face away from the suspended ceiling.
