What kind of ceiling finish should you choose for a bathroom: what to use and why?

You can't say that we have such a large selection. In fact, the number of options for bathroom ceiling design that won't deteriorate under frequent moisture exposure, won't develop mold, and won't lose their appearance within a month or so after installation can be counted on one hand.

Let's start with suspended ceilings.

Suspended Ceiling in the Bathroom

By a suspended ceiling, we mean a modular system consisting of a metal frame with panels attached to it, often square in shape (standard size of one panel is 60x60 cm).

The base for suspended ceiling panels can be made from various materials. In the range of such ceilings, apart from plastic and polystyrene panels, you can find steel ceilings, glass or mineral fiber ceilings, aluminum ceilings. For bathrooms and any humid room, metal coatings are not suitable.

IMPORTANT! When choosing material for the suspended frame cladding, pay attention to the moisture resistance rating indicated by the manufacturer on the product label. For bathrooms and toilets, you should use products with a moisture resistance rating of at least 95%.

NOTE: The last comment is advisory in nature. With sufficient exhaust ventilation and frequent room airing, you can buy materials with lower moisture resistance.

Main advantage: possibility to hide electrical wiring and engineering utilities.

Significant disadvantage: due to the need for a frame structure, the room will lose about 10-15 cm in height.

The suspended ceiling mounting method is not the only available one. In addition to it, a bathroom ceiling can also be made as a modular tile structure.

The frame system is also called the "laminated ceiling." In installation, rails of various sizes and shapes can be used. The frame elements must be joined end-to-end and separated by inserts.

IMPORTANT! In addition to a flat traditional ceiling, you can also create a curved one. For this, you will need bent rails.

Some technical specifications: the standard rail length can reach 600 cm, with a width of 3-30 cm, and the thickness of the product is 0.03-0.06 cm.

Frequently used material for the suspended ceiling frame in bathroom work is aluminum (do not confuse the frame material with the cladding material!).

$ Suspended Ceiling: PRICES

On average, materials cost from $1.7/m² (plastic ceiling, panel type) to up to $15.75/m² (ceiling finishing with aluminum cassette panels).

Suspended Ceiling

The difference between a suspended and a soffit ceiling is in the principle of mounting the entire structure: the supporting profiles of the soffit ceiling are mounted to the ceiling slab. These two types of ceilings are hard to distinguish visually.

The most commonly used soffit ceilings are laminated and gypsum board ceilings.

IMPORTANT! A laminated ceiling can be either suspended or soffit.

Installation of a soffit ceiling made of gypsum board should only be done using moisture-resistant sheets (marking "GKLV"). Unlike panel ceilings, which don't require finishing, a gypsum board ceiling needs spackling and painting. What to paint with? Any paint suitable for humid rooms.

$ Soffit Ceiling: PRICES

The cost of materials for mounting a soffit ceiling is slightly lower than that of a suspended ceiling due to the simpler installation method. A GKLV sheet costs on average $7.2 (thickness 9.5 mm).

Suspended Ceiling

If you believe the manufacturers, then a PVC film stretched under the ceiling can withstand a load up to 100 kg/m² during flooding. A suspended ceiling indeed can protect against flooding, and it also meets all other requirements for ceilings in humid rooms:

  • moisture-resistant;
  • no mold growth on it;
  • service life of at least 10 years;
  • possibility for wet cleaning with cleaning agents;
  • non-toxic;
  • wide color selection, possibility to print a custom design;
  • choice of surface type (fabric, glossy, fabric);
  • possibility to install recessed light fixtures;
  • engineering utilities can be hidden under a suspended ceiling.

Unlike the above-mentioned bathroom ceiling options, a suspended ceiling requires a minimum of 3 cm ceiling height (unless installing without backlighting and hidden utilities).

It is not possible to install such a ceiling with your own hands, at least because the film for suspension must be heated using a special thermal blower. Such equipment is expensive and not available for rent in many places.

Keep in mind that not all types of light fixtures are suitable for suspended ceilings. For information on choosing a light fixture for a suspended ceiling and installation rules, read a separate article on our website.

In short, it's not advisable to use incandescent and high-power halogen bulbs. If you still decide to install such a fixture, the power of incandescent bulbs should not exceed 60 W, and halogen ones - 35 W.

Due to the high temperature of the filament, the surface of the suspended ceiling may overheat and melt.

$ Suspended Ceilings: PRICES

A suspended ceiling is not a cheap pleasure, but it fully justifies its price. The cost of the fabric for installation is from $11/m². Installation costs are on average about 20% of the material cost.

Painted Ceiling

Paint for bathroom ceiling should be water-resistant. You can use the same paint as for room walls. Before painting, the ceiling surface should be leveled and treated with moisture-resistant spackle, then primed.

$ Painted Ceiling: PRICES

Good water-resistant paint can be purchased for $5-12/l (e.g., Dufa MatlatexDufa Matlatex or Latex Premium OLYMPIC). Painting cost is on average $3/m².

Wooden Ceiling

For those who appreciate natural design, natural materials like wood can be used. A wooden ceiling in the bathroom can be made similar to Finnish sauna cladding - from Finnish spruce or pine, Caucasian linden, alder, abachi, or Canadian cedar.

IMPORTANT! Coniferous species heat up quickly and significantly!

However, such cladding won't last long if a powerful exhaust system is not installed in the bathroom.

$ Cost of Wooden Ceiling

Depending on the type of wood chosen, a square meter of wooden ceiling can cost around $27-32.
