Simple tips for decorating walls

Hang a frame from your favorite movie or wedding photo — it seems like an obvious idea. But how to make these shots look anything but ordinary, and instead add a 'designer chic' to the interior? Designer Svetlana Zhigalina prepared seven answers!

1. Remember About Free Space

The more artwork, the more space around it should be left. Paspartu partially serves this purpose, but physical distance between objects is also necessary. For that reason, it's not recommended to hang artwork right next to two wardrobes — there won't be enough space for it.

2. Choose Mini-Format for Corridors

For narrow spaces, small works of the same form are great. It's better if they are connected by a single theme — this creates a sense of order. Large-format works won't suit because you can’t see them in perspective due to lack of space.

3. Make the Photo the Center of Attention

To achieve a more dramatic effect, hang artwork in the hallway opposite bedroom or living room doors. So that it is centered in the doorway. This instantly draws attention to the photograph and adds another visual point in the room.

4. Create a Vertical Composition

Vertical hanging is used much less than horizontal, and that's what makes it particularly stylish. Professionals know that this technique helps emphasize the height of a room and even visually increase it. Why not use it?

5. Balance Furniture Proportions

Balance the proportions of a bulky sofa with one or several large works. If the sofa is small and you want to make it look more solid, choose a smaller work that won't dominate the sofa but instead highlights its modest size.

6. Add Luxury to the Headboard

Hang photo artworks above the bed to make a plain headboard more eye-catching. Let it be a series of works in the same size and color palette, in identical frames. The uniqueness of this arrangement is that photographs frame the bed like it's part of a composition.

7. Always Use Paspartu

Don't skimp on paspartu! Even if you take a not particularly interesting photograph and enhance it with a good paspartu, it will come alive and create the effect of a more expensive, original piece. Experiment with the width of the field: the wider it is, the higher the perceived value of the image by viewers.
