Unusual Renovation of a Two-Room Apartment in Kyiv
Looking at this multi-level space of a Kyiv studio renovated from a two-room apartment, it's hard to believe that the designer had to work with limited square footage. This two-room flat is located in an old Kyiv fund, in a five-story building built in 1905. The apartment area is 64 square meters. The apartment owners are a young family of creative individuals.
The designer of the project is Kyiv architect Aleksey Bykov. The entire work, from project development to the end of the renovation, took one year. The clients had several wishes. The young couple wanted the entire interior design composition to be centered around the kitchen, which occupies the central area. Also, there should be a place for storing the family library in the apartment.

The highlight of the interior is the untreated brick walls. When builders removed traces of the previous renovation, many door openings were found embedded with silicate brick in the walls. The architect decided that these fragments should be replaced with material similar to the native one. A suitable option came up not long after, and the author managed to realize his idea by purchasing a batch of antique bricks with hallmarks.

Another unusual design move is the use of warm honey-colored chipboard in the interior. It contrasts the old with the modern. The remaining materials used in the finishing are also simple. These include floor planks, painted walls, a glass partition in the living room, and ceiling trim in the bathroom and hallway.
The apartment had all partitions demolished, and new ones were built partially, creating volume and a multi-level space. The kitchen is the center of the apartment, around which all other rooms were built. Its area is connected to the living room and a platform, while the bedroom is located behind a partition with a glass top.

The storage system in the studio is well thought out. The platform where the library is placed contains many drawers and cabinets. It can also be used as a small stage.
All furniture items, including soft furnishings, were made in Ukraine to order based on Aleksey Bykov's original sketches. The only exception here are the Vitra chairs. Lighting fixtures are also Ukrainian-made. In addition to the favorite chandelier brought by the homeowner from Italy.
