The house where the exciting events of the comedy "Home Alone" unfold actually exists, and it is not a set. The building still looks the way we remember it from the movie frames, although the interior of the rooms is very different from the cinematic version.

It is now hard to imagine winter holidays without this cult comedy, which rightfully can be called a symbol of the New Year mood. More than twenty years have passed, but every year, in anticipation of the New Year holidays, we still enjoy watching this film.

The plot of the movie unfolds on the eve of Christmas holidays. By chance, in the pre-holiday hustle, parents of eight-year-old Kevin forget their son at home. And the boy has to defend his house alone from burglars who, unfortunately, set their sights on the MacCaistler house. The movie beautifully conveys the atmosphere of approaching holidays, so what happens on screen always looks with trepidation and delight.

In 2015, the film marked its 25th anniversary, and the house that played one of the main roles in it became a real attraction. It is one of the few film hero houses that can boast such a story. Usually, filming for such movies takes place in specially built pavilions, not inside such mansions.

In 1988, the house was owned by John and Cynthia Abendshien (John and Cynthia Abendshien). And just two years later, after the comedy "Home Alone" was released on screens, their estate became one of the most famous in the United States. Throughout all the filming days, the family did not leave the house and continued to live in it, moving to the upper floors. And the 10-year-old Kevin even became friends with the hosts' daughter.

The cottage was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and it will soon celebrate its centenary. The house has three floors, and despite its quite impressive exterior, the total area of all its rooms is barely 400 square meters. It includes 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, several living rooms and hallways, a spacious terrace, a mansard with a bedroom area, and a separate garage for two cars. The area of the property where the residence is located is 20 acres.

The family of Kevin MacCaister lived at 671 Lincoln Avenue, in a wealthy picturesque village of Winnetka (Illinois, USA), near Lake Michigan.

The film's scenes were shot in the kitchen, the main hall, and several rooms on the first floor. The rest of the rooms were just sets built for the movie. Although the director was enchanted by the house and its interior, he found it very inconvenient to disturb such hospitable hosts.

Decorators Irv Cole and Daniel B. Clancy worked on the set design and creating a fairy-tale Christmas atmosphere. The interiors created by artists left no one indifferent. And even now, when you watch the movie or come across its broadcast on TV, it's hard not to admire the cozy and elegant design of the rooms.

The room interiors are in classical style, characterized by clear lines, proper proportions, the use of expensive natural materials in finishing, and luxurious color palette, from soft pastels to vibrant tones.

The color scheme of the MacCaister house is built on a combination of deep green and vivid red. Bright carpet paths, eye-catching bedding in the parents' bedroom, elegant sofa in the living room, and emerald walls in intermediate rooms blend perfectly with paper wallpapers featuring floral patterns, light interior doors, and woolen carpets. Of course, the special comfort that the atmosphere of Kevin's house provides is its beautiful Christmas decoration, which adorns every corner of the mansion.

In 2012, the Abendshains, tired of the ever-growing popularity, sold the mansion for $1.58 million, although the initial asking price was $2.4 million. In 1988, the couple paid $875,000 for it.

The photos below show the current interior of the rooms. It is hard to guess the look of that house that Kevin so desperately and selflessly defended from bandits. Except for the staircase, maybe.
