Interior gift for mom: a cozy 92 sqm apartment with everything thought through to the smallest detail
Summary
The apartment was designed for an adult woman who planned to live there alone. Her son was the one who initiated the project—he approached the design firm HLSTUDIO, led by founder Vitaly Shepard, to create a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing space for his mother. It was important to the client that the interior not only looked beautiful but was also practical for daily use. Therefore, great attention was paid to selecting furniture, considering ergonomics, materials, and details that the homeowner would interact with every day.
Details
The apartment had a favorable original layout, so no drastic changes were made to it. The goal was to adapt the space to the future homeowner’s lifestyle. The kitchen-living room remained as a shared area where cooking and entertaining guests could take place, the bedroom served as a private space, and the study was designated for working and relaxing.
Special attention was paid to comfort: a convenient kitchen with a large work surface, thoughtful storage solutions, ergonomic furniture, multiple lighting options, and preserving the beautiful views through panoramic windows. The client actively participated in selecting the furniture and materials during the design process. Some items were replaced after personal testing if they proved to be insufficiently comfortable.
The kitchen set was designed based on a custom plan. The fronts combine white enamel with natural oak veneer, while the countertop is made of large-format ceramic tile featuring a light stone pattern. The walls above the countertop are covered with large-format ceramic tile in a stone pattern: the design uses four tiles in total, and this finish continues into the TV area, thus visually connecting the two sections of the space.
The kitchen is equipped with built-in refrigerators and freezers, a dishwasher, oven, and microwave, as well as a sink, food waste disposer, and water filtration system. An induction cooking surface with built-in exhaust is installed on the island, allowing for the elimination of a traditional range hood while maintaining an open space feel.
The materials were chosen based on humidity considerations, practicality, and the overall color scheme. However, there was no attempt to use expensive materials everywhere: natural veneer and distinctive finishes were retained in the most prominent areas, while for some of the furniture pieces, high-quality MDF with a wood texture was preferred.
A unique soft bench has appeared in the entryway: its upholstery was made from fabric typically used for curtains. This unconventional approach created an interesting texture and made the piece stand out as individual.
The bedroom features wallpaper with a textile texture that creates a soft, cozy atmosphere. An unusual choice was the blue ceiling, which matches the color of the bed’s soft headboard. The room has a bed with an adjustable base, while storage is kept in a separate wardrobe.
The apartment has two bathrooms: a guest bathroom and a main bathroom with a shower area. The main bathroom’s standout feature is a partition made of dichroic glass that transitions colors from blue to pink. It is located next to the window, so as natural light changes, the glass reflects light differently, creating an interesting color effect. The partition was custom-made. This turned out to be one of the more challenging stages of the project, as the glass damage required the structure to be redone.
The cabin includes a work area, storage space, and a foldable sofa, allowing it to be used for various purposes. A notable feature is the electrically operated wooden blinds, which enable control of natural light while maintaining the view through the windows.
The homeowner is interested in sewing, so an additional work area was designed inside the closet. When it’s not in use, the work surface can be retracted to free up space.
The layout of the bathrooms was designed with consideration for the convenient placement of plumbing fixtures, storage areas, and daily use. Ceramic tile and decorative porcelain were used for finishing, combining soothing stone textures with color accents. The plumbing fixtures were chosen in a minimalist modern style, including built-in faucets and shower equipment.
