Ye Xiao Xiao by Aurora Design: Modern Tea Space Inspired by Yunnan's Cultural Heritage
Ye Xiao Xiao, designed by Aurora Design in Mengzi, Yunnan Province, is a 2583-square-foot tea space that blends traditions, nature and emotions. It draws inspiration from Yunnan's profound tea culture and the ancient Tea Horse Road, immersing visitors in a world where architecture becomes a sensory experience of tranquility, memory and cultural resonance.
Tea Culture as Emotional Design
Yunnan Province is often regarded as the birthplace of tea culture, with cultivation and trade traditions that trace back millennia. Aurora Design pays homage to this history through the lens of emotional design, transforming intangible feelings into a physical space. By abstracting emotions tied to tea culture, history and landscape, architects have created an environment conducive to calm, contemplation and harmony.
Spatial Flow and Circular Forms
The spatial composition unfolds through circular elements of varying sizes, guiding visitors on a smooth journey reminiscent of winding tea routes. Each curve, threshold and transition becomes an emotional gateway, revealing views into history while connecting the present with the past. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to pour in and offer panoramic views, enhancing the sense of immersion into nature and memory.
-
Entrance and Bar Counter: Earthy tones and raw materials inspired by the Tea Horse Road are used in the design. This tactile palette adds authenticity to the space.
-
Central Platform: A raised platform surrounded by white walls and falling drapes serves as the interior's focal point. The fabric cascades like a waterfall, softening the space and creating a sense of movement.
-
Tea Area: Ascending to the upper level, visitors enter a tea space surrounded by curved walls, plants and organic furniture, fostering an atmosphere of intimacy and comfort.
Materials and Atmosphere
The palette combines natural wood, stone, fabric and earthy colors—white, beige and dark brown—to create an emotional chain from tranquility to reflection. Drapes and soft textile elements dominate, acting as a communicative medium between the space and soul. The interplay of softness and hardness reflects the contrast between illusion and reality, forming a balance and tension.
Organic decorative compositions—bonsai, single plant clusters and natural stone—further enhance the serene atmosphere. The active use of white space ensures air circulation, making peace a part of the architecture itself.
Emotion as Architecture
Aurora Design views emotion as the foundation of architecture. The coconut paradigm of contrasts—rough exteriors and refined interiors—is here translated into a harmonious coexistence of humanity, nature and memory. Visitors are invited to leave behind the noise of daily life and embrace tranquility through sensory immersion: the aroma of tea, rustling leaves, shifting light colors.
The project creates what designers call emotional islands—spaces where emotions can rest, evolve and reconnect with the human soul. It is both a cultural tribute and an oasis for modern life.
Ye Xiao Xiao is more than just a tea space. It is an experiential journey through history, nature and inner emotions. Grounded in Yunnan's tea heritage and infused into contemporary spatial perception, Aurora Design has crafted an immortal sanctuary where architecture, culture and emotion intersect.
