Two-Story House by ArchLAB Studio: Cozy Retreat Amidst Pine Forests in Vilnius
Contemporary Integration into Historic Vilnius
Located in the old district of Vilnius, this two-story house by ArchLAB Studio demonstrates how carefully planned design can harmoniously integrate modern architecture into a historical context. The area, defined by standalone low-rise homes, gains a new yet respectful addition in the form of this two-story residence that honors traditions while embracing progressive design.
Design Inspired by Nature
The mature pine forest on the site deeply influenced the form of the house. Nature plays a central role in how the home is perceived:
Spacious windows let in natural light and offer panoramic views of the pine forest and urban development beyond.
Wooden terraces extend the interior space outdoors, creating ideal zones for relaxation, guests, and connecting with nature.
Biophilic elements dominate the design, creating a calm and soothing atmosphere that softens the stress of city life.
This harmonious connection with nature aligns with modern design principles based on health, sustainability, and visual harmony.
Thoughtful Interior Layout
Every square foot of the 3024 sq ft space was meticulously planned to support a modern lifestyle, maximizing spatial efficiency and connection with nature:
Basement: Unobtrusive underground garages preserve the visual openness of the site and reduce surface clutter.
Second floor: Houses bedrooms, offering cozy and well-lit spaces for rest and privacy.
Top floor: High ceilings elevate the kitchen, dining area, and living rooms, providing dynamic views in both directions—urban energy from one side, tranquil greenery from the other.
This vertical arrangement not only optimizes the natural slope of the site but also enhances a sense of ascent—an architectural journey from earthly seclusion to elevated openness.
Urban Life Naturally Balanced
In an era of dense urbanization, this two-story house presents a powerful contrast. It shows how homes can exist in the city while maintaining a strong connection to the natural world. The duality of the house—city and nature, past and present, structure and softness—creates a rich experience for its inhabitants.
"We wanted to create a space where everyday life flows effortlessly between interior and landscape, between sanctuary and freedom" — ArchLAB Studio
