The lake house is a poetic response to memories, nature and sustainable development. Created by architects H2 in Vietnam, this modest 1291 square foot home recalls childhood leaf huts that were once built under the shade of large trees. It's a nostalgic but future-oriented structure—almost entirely made from recycled 'waste', celebrating the harmony between people, community and environment.

Inspiration from Childhood

The design concept emerged from a grandfather's story about summer days spent building temporary huts with friends under the tree canopy. His wish was to recreate that joy for his grandchildren, giving them a place to connect with nature, learn through play and feel the wonder he himself experienced. The lake house was conceived to fulfill this dream: a rustic, elevated structure that fits snugly into the bamboo grove and catches breezes from the nearby lake.

Built from Recycled Materials

Instead of using concrete and steel, architects used materials salvaged from old buildings—corrugated sheets, steel structures, wooden planks and other 'waste'. Reusing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills aligns with the 3R campaign: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Every element demonstrates that discarded components can find new life, reducing environmental impact and construction costs.

These recycled surfaces also give the house a weathered, timeless look as though it has always belonged to its forest setting. The rustic color palette not only charms but also underscores a commitment to sustainable living and mindful construction.

Architecture in Harmony with Nature

Raised slightly above ground, the house rests on tall bamboo trees and is sheltered by their canopy. The open design welcomes lake breezes, keeping interiors cool without mechanical air conditioning. Natural ventilation combined with porous building construction ensures a consistently fresh atmosphere.

The architecture fosters interaction—between people and nature, as well as people with each other. Light filters through holes, breezes flow through spaces, and trees cast dynamic shadows throughout the day. The result is not only a comfortable environment but also a strong emotional connection to the landscape.

Simplicity and openness in the interior design allow children to run, climb, crawl and play freely. This is a place that encourages curiosity and discovery, promoting both physical activity and emotional growth.
