The Pitch by Mark Odom Studio

Mark Odom Studio repurposed containers to create a unique experience in the new hospitality complex Parmer Ponds The Pitch in Austin.

The Pitch is a distinctive hospitality and entertainment complex for fans of Austin FC and the wider community, which opened in spring. The half-acre space presents a unique destination with hospitality, retail, food, offices, and outdoor events serviced by flexible two-level repurposed containers. The unique project was designed by the renowned architecture and interior design firm Austin, Mark Odom Studio.

"Developer Karlin Real Estate was interested in using containers; they had not previously worked with such a concept and really wanted to use the idea," says Mark Odom, founder of Mark Odom Studio. "We had previously explored using containers for commercial, retail and multi-family projects but all remained unrealized; we believe The Pitch is the first project of its kind in Austin and the region."

The complex consists of 23 repurposed containers in two standard sizes: 8 x 20 feet and 8 x 40 feet. The containers are stacked on top of each other, creating two levels, then joined to form five separate buildings with varying sizes that serve different functions for users, creating a dense visual and physical experience and views of the landscape.

"Each module is built differently, but all use identical custom details, materials and colors. This allows us to focus on the true form of each container," says Odom.

First-level containers are used as points of sale for local best restaurants. Second-level containers are multifunctional: as balconies, interior insulated gathering spaces, office areas, private party rooms and spectator areas for Austin FC matches. Custom stairs, vertical steel railings and awnings were carefully designed and implemented to connect each level. Three 40-foot-high containers are installed at the ends to serve as landmarks from a distance — while also functioning as restrooms and electrical rooms on the first level: each has a 40-foot internal vertical view to the roof. A mass wooden pavilion with custom steel apertures further strengthens the program between Austin FC’s training field and The Pitch.

Previously flat terrain was carefully landscaped so that the containers could blend and adapt to elevation changes. Because each module was developed uniquely, the experience and views also encourage users to walk around and explore.

To achieve the required level of execution on this unique project, Mark Odom Studio closely collaborated with developers Leap Structures, Citadel and Makehaus. "We approached this project as a joint team, and the complexity required all disciplines to solve problems together — from preliminary schematics to construction. The timeline was short, and the team worked non-stop from start to finish; every member of the team was important for meeting deadlines," says Odom.

Additionally, Mark Odom Studio also handled the selection of interior and exterior finishes, as well as outdoor and indoor furniture and installation.
