House with Flying Staircase: Minimalist Renovation by Makedesign Studio
In 2022, architects Victoria Lukyanova and Diana Karnaухova from Makedesign Studio presented a house with a flying staircase in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. This 270 square meter house underwent a comprehensive transformation, evolving from the outdated 1990s design to a contemporary minimalist sanctuary where concrete, glass, wood and large-format ceramic tile harmoniously blend.
Renovation Vision
The original structure, characterized by a heavy monolithic staircase and compartmentalized rooms, no longer met the lifestyle of its owners—a mature couple whose children have grown and moved out. The clients sought a complete spatial transformation that would be functional for their current needs and cozy for family visits. Together with the structural engineer, the Makedesign team reimagined the house layout, emphasizing openness and fluidity.
Flying Staircase: Central Sculptural Element
The core of the renovation is the 'flying' staircase, a testament to innovative design and engineering solutions. Replacing the original heavy staircase, the new structure appears to float without visible supports or handrails. Achieving this required constant collaboration with structural engineers to develop a hidden support system that ensures both safety and aesthetic appeal. This staircase not only fulfills its function but also serves as a vibrant visual centerpiece around which the rest of the interior gracefully unfolds.
Design: A Blend of Minimalism and Warmth
Adhering to minimalist philosophy, the interior showcases clean lines and expansive surfaces. The use of black fixtures, latticed wooden panels and strategic blue accents adds depth and visual interest, creating a dynamic interplay with neutral tones of concrete and wood. Two-level ceilings enhance the sense of space, while large windows let in abundant natural light, amplifying the airy atmosphere of the home.
Functional Spaces Adapted for Modern Life
The first floor features an open living area that smoothly connects to the kitchen, separated by elegant glass partitions that preserve spatial continuity. The kitchen itself is a model of minimalist design: concealed storage systems and built-in appliances ensure a clutter-free environment. On the upper level, former children's rooms were transformed into guest suites, while a versatile relaxation zone now serves as the center for leisure, work and entertainment. This area is unified by a modular sofa providing flexibility for various activities—from family gatherings to quiet evenings.
Harmonious Blend of Aesthetics and Functionality
The 'House with Flying Staircase' demonstrates Makedesign Studio's commitment to creating spaces that are simultaneously visually stunning and highly functional. Through thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail, Lukyanova and Karnaухova created a home reflecting contemporary sensibilities while meeting the unique needs of its inhabitants.
