Renovation and Expansion of a Modern Mid-Century Home from 1962 by Klopf Architecture represents a thoughtful transformation of a home designed by Roger Lee in 1962. The original house was preserved almost in its original state and modernized for a young family's contemporary lifestyle, while maintaining Lee's architectural concept.

Preserving History, Enhancing Functionality

Recognized for its architectural significance, the original mid-century structure required careful restoration in accordance with a rigorous design review process by Stanford University's real estate office, which ensures historical integrity within the community. Klopf Architecture embraced this challenge, integrating modern living solutions while respecting the original design.

As in many homes of the 1960s, the layout was compact with minimal views. Klopf reimagined the interior space and expanded the home by approximately 1,100 square feet, improving spatial flow and connection to the street. The 240-square-foot enclosed garage area now provides additional storage, replacing the outdated garage.

Connecting with Nature

The most revolutionary change involved renovations in the backyard. The outdated pool was removed to create space for a peaceful outdoor retreat. In collaboration with Outer Space Landscape Architects, the team implemented layered terrace zones that smoothly transition into the local California terrain. This expanded the visual space of the home toward surrounding hills, which can now be enjoyed through enlarged rear windows.

Architectural Improvements with Purpose

On the main level, Klopf replaced narrow openings in the master bedroom and study with tall, custom-designed windows from Western Window Systems, following the roof line and framing corners for a panoramic effect. A new light-filled office was added to the main complex—perfectly suited for remote work with scenic views of the hills.

Downstairs, previously utilitarian basement space was transformed into a new family room and guest wing, opening directly onto a sunken terrace through full-height glass doors.

Interior-Exterior Space, Reimagined

The rethought back terrace now serves as an open extension of the living room, shaded by a modern pergola with ribs. This outdoor relaxation area has become a favorite spot for gatherings, with improved access to the backyard and lower guest zone via double stairs.

Inside, original elements were restored with care. The Malm wood-burning fireplace received a modern update with a gas insert and striking new Heath Ceramics tile. The previously closed kitchen was opened into the living area, with a new snack bar and outdoor grilling zone, connecting interior and exterior for dining.

Respect for Roger Lee's Legacy

Throughout the home, architectural references to Roger Lee’s design were carefully preserved. Restorations include a full-height glass window at the entrance, repetition of wooden elements in the facade and courtyard, and appropriate exterior cladding materials, respecting the original color palette.
