House P+E by Voilá! in Barbastro, Spain
Contemporary Farm Inspired by Rural Life
The House P+E by Spanish studio Voilá! reinterprets the traditional farm for modern family life. Located on the outskirts of Barbastro, a town in northeastern Spain, the house draws inspiration from industrial and agricultural structures that dominate the rural landscape of the region.
The result is housing that feels both familiar and refreshing — a happy farm, combining practicality and warmth, offering a peaceful retreat from the monotony of urban development.
Design Concept: Between Village and City
The project idea emerged from the desire to bridge rural tradition and modern life. Voilá! presented a house inspired by the simplicity of nearby farms and warehouses — practical, geometric, and unpretentious, yet enhanced with cozy home comfort.
The house occupies the northern edge of the plot, leaving the southern part free for a large garden. This layout optimizes lighting and privacy, establishing a natural dialogue between interior and exterior spaces.
Spatial Organization and Functionality
The two-level structure, complemented by a lit basement, develops along the longitudinal axis, following the path of the sun.
-
First floor: Main living areas open to the garden through large southern windows, flooding interior spaces with light and warmth.
-
Northern side: Service areas such as bathrooms, hallways and storage rooms are located on the northern strip to improve energy efficiency and privacy.
-
Upper levels: The volume gradually divides, creating terraces that extend living areas and give the building a sculptural appearance.
This strategic spatial arrangement transforms a compact, functional project into a series of attractive multi-dimensional spaces.
Materials: Industrial Shell, Warm Heart
The exterior is defined by continuous metal cladding, used without breaks on the facade and roof — uniting the structure into a seamless metal shell reminiscent of regional utility buildings.
Inside, the ambiance shifts. Warm wooden finishes add softness and human scale, creating a dialogue between the industrial shell of the house and its cozy inner core.
Light, neutral tones enhance the sense of spaciousness, while selective texture usage adds a gentle tactile richness to the home.
Sustainable Design and Passive House Standards
Sustainability was the main principle in each design decision. The House P+E was designed as a compact, sealed and well-insulated structure, meeting the principles of Passive House.
These methods ensure energy efficiency, thermal comfort and reduced environmental impact — a modern response to the challenges of contemporary life in Spain's changing climate.
By integrating passive design technologies with regional materials and forms, Voilá! demonstrates that sustainability can be both practical and poetic.
Playful Architecture of Everyday Life
The House P+E is not a nostalgic exercise but a modern reimagining of rural modernism. Through honest materials, sustainable work and bright interiors, the house conveys the essence of family life — comfort, simplicity and connection to place.
As Voilá! notes:
“We imagined a farm with a happy spirit — a place where family life thrives among simplicity, warmth and sunshine.” — Voilá!
