How to Turn Your Open Yard into a Small Garden?

If you are lucky enough to have a yard adjacent to your house, don't despair at its unpleasant and concrete look. Instead, marvel at the incredible potential for development and greenery that lies in your hands! Make sure you know about your freedom of action with a condominium if the yard is shared and in use: let's turn your yard into a cute rejuvenating garden.

Create Different Zones in Your Yard

Before starting, take some time to think: imagine different zones that could fit in your yard. No matter what area you have, it is highly recommended to structure your territory into different zones. Each one will be dedicated to a specific activity.

It could be (adapted to your desires and the space you have) a dining zone with a table and chairs, a barbecue area, a relaxation zone with small garden furniture or just a lounge chair placed in the middle of plants for reading or resting, a play zone that can accommodate swings or a small petanque field, and so on.

How to harmoniously organize these zones in your yard:

• Play with levels, elevate the relaxation zone, for example, with a wooden terrace.
• Install a canopy over the dining zone to provide shade and privacy (compared to upper floors).

Add Planters with Plants

The easiest and most accessible way to green your yard? Keep the current surface and install planters with plants! Place them in containers large enough to limit rapid water evaporation (substrate dries out very quickly in small pots), and choose plants adapted to the lighting of your yard:

• What plants are suitable for a shaded yard? Violets and ferns due to their decorative foliage, as well as rhododendrons or hibiscus for flowers. Bamboo also loves this.
• What plants are suitable for a sunny yard? If you enjoy sunshine in your yard, even partially, welcome butterfly trees, perennial geraniums, palms, and why not add a few dwarf fruit trees!

What About a Vegetable Garden?

In your yard transformed into a garden, the vegetable garden takes its place provided there is sufficient sunlight for growing vegetables: most need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to develop. However, some vegetable plants prefer partial shade, such as lettuce, spinach, parsley, mint, rhubarb, wild strawberries and other berries.

Install quite large and deep containers (at least 30 or 40 cm), especially if you plan to grow root vegetables. A raised vegetable bed is also good in the yard: you won't hurt your back and can still play with heights.
