The History of the Halloween Pumpkin
Don't believe it? Halloween pumpkins were once turnips! How so?
Halloween, contrary to what most people think, is not an American holiday. It originated in Celtic culture on the territory of modern Ireland. At that time, centuries ago, the Celts celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of winter in a festival called Samhain. Back then, the Celts believed that spirits of the dead could return to earth. Therefore, during the festival, the Celts wore masks to drive away evil spirits and made lanterns from turnips to light the way for the dead.
But when Irish people arrived in America in the 19th century, they couldn't find turnips. Only pumpkins! And you can imagine what happened next? They had to come up with a solution.
How to Make a Halloween Pumpkin
There are two ways to create a typical Halloween pumpkin. The first is painting, which is perfect for those with little time or manual skills. The second way is carving the pumpkin. This process takes more time, but it's worth it when you're creating an original Halloween pumpkin with a lantern and everything else.
Check out step-by-step instructions for creating both types of pumpkin, and then simply choose the method you prefer. Take a look.
Painted Halloween Pumpkin
To make a painted Halloween pumpkin, you'll need a pumpkin (of course!). Additionally, templates for eyes and mouth will be useful. You can easily find them online. You'll also need a marker to draw the design and acrylic paints to finish the work. First, cut out the template, leaving it hollow. Attach the template to the pumpkin and paint the entire inside.
Remove the template and finish painting the design with acrylic paints. Done! At the end, you can decorate your pumpkin with other elements such as a hat, wig and everything else that fits your Halloween theme.
Carved Halloween Pumpkin
But if you want an original pumpkin with a Halloween grin, then go for the carved pumpkin. Although it's somewhat more time-consuming and requires some skills, it's worth it. To make such a pumpkin, you'll also need a carving template.
Then take the best knife and start making precise cuts. Don't forget to place a candle or lamp inside the pumpkin.
